CHART NOTES

Dengue Fever moves into the #1 spot with their lead off single from their forthcoming album Cannibal Courtship called "Cement Slippers". The song has been a free download off the Dengue Fever website for weeks now and precludes the April 19 release of the new album. Listening to the sample tracks off the new album has me excited about getting it on the first day out. I've become a fan of Dengue Fever since I was made aware of them late last summer. Saw them in concert on October 30, 2010. Love their music. "Cement Slippers" could be their big breakout single. Reminds me somewhat of the old "Rock Lobster" song from the B-52s.

Elsewhere on the chart: Not much upward movement in most of the songs this week. Foster the People break into the top 5 this week with their hit "Pumped Up Kicks". The song moves up 2 from #7 to #5. Most of the other songs on the top 20 make small incremental moves up by 1 or 2 notches.

Songs taking signifcant falls this week include The Decemberists' "Down By the Water" dropping from #5 to #10. This was a former #1 record. Also dropping big is "Hands" by The Ting Tings. They drop 5 from #10 to #15. The Ting Tings have been on this chart with "Hands" since the fall of 2010. Looks like this could be their last week on.

The two debut songs for the week are "I Do" by Colbie Caillat at #19 and "Machu Picchu" by The Strokes at #20.

CHART NOTES

Plain White T's top the chart with a new #1 song. "Rhythm of Love" a casual, summertime sounding pop piece reaches the top after several weeks on the chart. They replace Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" which falls from #1 to #2 this week after a 3 week reign at the top. Plain White T's topped the WT20 back in 2007 with a number 1 hit called "Hey There Delilah." Good to see them on top again.

Elsewhere on the Weekly Top 20: Hey Monday moves into the top 10 with their alt rocker "I Don't Wanna Dance" up 2 from #11 to #9. Caro Emerald moves from #13 to #10 with "Stuck", the latest in a series of swing style big band jazz numbers. Emerald is very popular in parts of Europe.

Two songs make their debut on the 20. They include "Hands" by The Ting Tings at #19 and "Crossfire" by Brandon Flowers at #20. Flowers is the lead singer for the group The Killers, who've enjoyed chart success here in the past.

CHART NOTES (10-3-10)

Katy Perry leads a pack of three up one point each to capture the #1 song of the week. Her latest smah hit is "Teenage Dream" and it's at #1 for the first week. Following Perry is Taylor Swift with her latest crossover country pop hit "Mine" coming in at #2, up from #3 of last week. Following her is Bruno Mars up 2 from #5 to #3 with "Just the Way You Are." All a good songs, worthy to be at the top.

Sinking from #1 to #4 is Taio Cruz and hist latest, "Dynamite". While he may be at #4 this week, just wanted to remind you that his only 2 records to make it to this chart both hit #1. A few months ago the guy was at #1 with "Break Your Heart."

Rounding out the top 5 is Maroon 5 who slip 1 from #4 to #5 with their former #1 hit, "Misery".

The fastest moving singles in the top 20 are both in the top 10 this week. Each moving up 6 points, they are "Rhythm of Love" by Plain White T's, up from #12 to #6. Not too far behind is the country duo of Sugarland with their latest, "Stuck Like Glue" moving from last week's #14 to the #8 spot. These are probably headed for the top 5 by next week.

Three songs make their chart debut. They are "Only Girl (in the World)" by Rihanna stopping by at #18; "Nobody" a comeback single by The Doobie Brothers, checking in at #19; and the latest track, "A Day Without Rain" from Selena Gomez & The Scene debtcomes in at #20.

Taio Cruz holds on to the #1 spot for the 2nd consecutive week with "Dynamite". Hot on his heals are Katy Perry with "Teenage Dream" at #2 and Taylor Swift with "Mine" at #3. These 3 records are in top position to claim the top spot next week. Who will it be? Rounding out the top 5 is Bruno Mars and his hit "Just the Way You Are" moving into the #5 spot up from #8 last week.

Fastest 2 moving songs on the chart belong to Plain White T's and their latest single "Rhythm of Love" moving up from #18 to #12 and Sugarland's "Stuck Like Glue" up from #20 to #14. Both tracks are enjoying their second week on the chart.

Only one song debuts this week and that belongs to Uncle Kracker with Kid Rock. The name of the song is "Good to Be Me". It checks in for the first week at #17.

CHART NOTES:

Taio Cruz claims the #1 spot with "Dynamite", the second of his 2 top 20 hits to go to the top this year. Cruz scored a #1 hit earlier this summer with "Break Your Heart" which held the position for 2 weeks. Katy Perry moves up 2 from #5 to #3 this week with "Teenage Dream." Country superstar Taylor Swift climbs into the top 5 with "Mine" her latest pop hit moving from #8 to #5.

Fastest rising single on the chart is "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, who at one time was a child singer celebrity in Hawaii doing impressions of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Looks like the guy has a smash hit on this hands as the single moves from #17 to #8. Unfortunately for Mars, he was busted this week in Las Vegas for coccaine possesion.

New songs on the Top 20 include "Rhythm of Love" by Plain White T's at #18, "2012 (It Ain't the End)" by Jay Sean at #19 and "Stuck Like Glue" by Sugarland at #20.

Two songs make their debut on the top 20 this week. They are "Brand New Day" by Lindsey Ray with Tim Meyers. This song might be familiar to many TV viewers as one of the current themes for a series of TARGET store ads. "Brand New Day" bows in at #19.

The second debut song this week is by Bruno Mars. This guy grew up in Hawaii and started his musical career as a kid impersonating Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Today he has a nationwide top 10 hit called "Just The Way You Are". It marks its chart appearance here for the first week at #17.

Taylor Swift is this week's fastest moving artist. Her latest countryfied pop hit "Mine" shoots up from #19 to #8 this week, an eleven point leap. Future #1?

Moving into the top 10 is Katy Perry with "Teenage Dream" moving up 5 from #10 to #15. Holding on to #1 for the 4th straight week is Maroon 5 and "Misery"

Maroon 5 is still at #1 with "Misery". This is the 3rd consecutive week for that song to be at the top spot. Holding at #2 for a second consecutive week is Scissor Sisters and their track "Fire With Fire". Moving up from #5 to #3 is Taio Cruz and "Dynamite". New to the top 5 is A Rocket to the Moon and "Like We Used To". The song is up from #7.

Katy Perry took a huge leap this week from #19 (her debut) to #10 this week. The song is "Teenage Dream" and is currently #1 on several other charts and comes at the release of her new album with the same name. Could this track be headed for the top here?

Moving up 4 spots from #18 to #14 is Neon Trees and their former #1 hit "Animal". The track was almost going to fall off the chart this week, but picked up momentum because I saw it listed at #1 or near the top of several other charts. It's one of the best songs this year to be recorded in a new wave, alt rock style.

Comeback resilience: La Roux is at #3 up from #4 with "Bulletproof". The synthesized dance track topped this chart late last year and made a return to the chart earlier this summer. This certainly is a very popular song!

Scissor Sisters enter the top 10 with "Fire With Fire" at #10 up from #13. Maroon 5 sits at #8 this week with "Misery", up 2 from #10.

Debuts include "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz at #19 and "Uh Oh" by Kyrah at #20.

Katy Perry's "California Gurls" (featuring Snoop Dog) moves up 1 from #3 to #2 this week. Could number 1 not be too far away? The song tops many other charts.

Two records make their debut on the top 20. They are "Misery" by Maroon 5 at #18 and "Jar of Hearts" at #19 by Christina Perri "Misery" is this week's featured video clip.

18 Break Your Heart - Taio Cruz - new
19 Imma Be - The Black Eyed Peas - 13
20 Rude Boy - Rihanna - new

CHART NOTES:

We got a lot of movement this week. First off, Lady GaGa holds at #1 for a 2nd week with "Telephone" a popular duet she does with Beyonce. Lady GaGa also debuts at #17 with "Alejandro", a track off her latest album The Fame Monster. And her former #1 hit "Bad Romance" has departed this chart after a long chart run that started on November 15, 2009.
The Script has inched their way up the chart one position at the time over several weeks. This week "Breakeven" moves up 1 from #3 to #2. Is the top spot reachable by this group?

Jazzy diva Caro Emerald leaps 7 points this week moving from #11 to #4 with her danceable track, "Back It Up." This song is not listed on any charts that I know of. I think this track and her newer "A Night Like This" single should be getting tons of radio airplay and listings on various charts. Her music is a refreshing break from a sea of sameness.

Colbie Caillat is making a strong chart showing as her latest track "I Never Told You" moves up 2 from #8 to #6. Other movers in an upward stance this week include Carrie Underwood with "Temporary Home" up 1 from #10 to #9; Lady Antebellum moving from #16 to #11 with "American Honey", this while "Need You Now" is still in the top 5 at #3.

A Fine Frenzy gains positions by moving up 3 from #15 to #12 with "Blow Away". Noisettes may have another hit here with "Every Now and Then" moving up 4 from #17 to #13. And Donny Osmond also moves up 4 from #19 to #15 with his cover version of "I Have You To Thank," a track that seems to not be available in the domestic market.

For songs to move up, it is unfortunate that some songs have to also move down. Taking big tumbles this week are Marina & the Diamonds. They held on to the #7 spot for the last 2 weeks with "Hollywood". This week the song takes a 7 point dive moving down to #14. Also falling 7 points is Ringo Starr. His latest track "Walk With You" falls from #9 to #16. And finally Black Eyed Peas are on their way out as "Imma Be" tumbles from #13 to #19. That was a short lived hit in these parts.

CHART NOTES

Lady Antebellum is back at #1 with their smash hit "Need You Now". After dropping to number 2 and holding that position for the past 3 weeks, the hit single nudges its way to the top displacing Train's "Hey Soul Sister" which drops to #3. This is the 8th week at #1 for Lady Antebellum, the longest any song has held the top spot on my weekly chart.

Lady GaGa and Beyonce with their hit "Telephone" up 1 to #2.

Elsewhere on the chart, we got some movement in the ranks with some songs gaining and others falling. Big fall is Boys Like Girls, with "Two is Better Than One". The song which they enlisted Taylor Swift to sing on, takes a dive from #6 to #13. Ringo Starr breaks into the top 10 with "Walk With You". He is joined by Paul McCartney on this track which is taken from his latest album Y Not. A Fine Frenzy moves up 4 from #20 to #16 with "Blow Away".

Hot debut tracks include Caro Emerald's catchy jazz song "Back It Up" checking in at #17 and Lady Antebellum with "American Honey" at #18. Be sure to watch Caro's video. Wiping glasses never looked so sexy before.

CHART NOTES

Lots of movement on this week's chart. First of all, the big leaps were accomplished by Train and Lady GaGa.

"Hey Soul Sister", a single by Train that has been lingering around since last year, debut on the top 20 at #18 last week. It leaps to #7 this week. Ditto for "Telephone" by Lady GaGa with Beyonce. That track goes from #19 to #8 this week, an eleven point leap. Can anyone say number one record? Problem is, which one, if any?

Lady Antebellum holds on to the #1 spot with "Need You Now" for the 5th week. The single is now the title track to their brand new album. Great country stuff with lots of pop crossover potential.

Also new to the top 10 is "Breakeven" by The Script, climbing 2 to #9 this week. Also climbing 2 points is Rihanna's "Hard" up from #12 to #10.

Up in the top 5 land, Lady GaGa moves up a point from #4 to #3 with "Bad Romance". This is a former #1 record that also stayed at the top spot for 5 weeks. Rebound anyone?

Be sure to check out our featured video, "Hey Soul Sister" by Train.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Asteroids Galaxy Tour is a new band from Denmark that has been recording since 2008. They released two singles last year, the most famous being "Around the Bend" which was featured on an Apple iPod commercial. Shortly afterward the band caught my attention and I bought their two track EP which featured "Bend" as well as the single "The Sun Ain't Shining No More." Both songs hit Mel's Weekly Top 20 with "Around the Bend" going to number 1 and staying there for 3 weeks. It ended up as my 8th most favorited song on my Top 100 Hits of 2008 chart.

Asteroids Galaxy Tour are back this year with a new single and a new album. Fruit is their new album that has already been released in Europe and will be released in the U.S. on October 27. The first single is "The Golden Age" and features the vocals of lead singer Mette Lindberg as has been with the band's 2 previous hits. She's an acquired taste much like perhaps, Stevie Nicks. "The Golden Age" is a catchy song with a wonderful video that I think is one of the best for 2009. "The Golden Age" debuts at #19 on Mel's Weekly Top 20. Enjoy it here:

That all said here are the Top 20 Hits of the Week from Mel's Weekly Top 20 chart:

CHART NOTES: Focus on Indie Artists & Tracks

Looking over my chart and comparing it to charts from the industry and others, I find that many of my current songs are not in the mainstream. Among those are the following:

I Keep Falling - Lovers and Poets: Lead singer Shannon Hurley is quite popular on the indie music website TheSixtyOne.com. I heard this song and 2 others there and love all of em. Debuts at #20.

Don't Upset the Rhythm (Go Baby Go) - Noisettes: Not a staple on American charts or radio, this is actually quite old. It went to #2 in the UK, #17 here. The follow-up single "Never Forget You" barely dented domestic charts. It went #1 here and currently sits at #3.

Sweet Silver Lining - Kate Voegele: I can't figure out why she is not popular on radio at all. She has a solid album full of radio friendly songs. "Sweet Silver Lining" is one of them. Currently at #14 up from #16.

Next in Line - Meese: This is one of those Apple iTunes giveaways. Got it a few weeks ago. I like it. Good enough to place at #13.

Bourgeois Shangri-La - Miss Li: This song is featured on the 5th generation iPod Nano commercial from Apple. Like previous iPod songs, this track is very catchy and should be a hit. Currently at #10.

City on Our Knees - tobyMac: OK, so this song is out of the mainstream but very popular in the Contemporary Christian music market. It's #1 on iTunes. #5 on my chart. Great song.

Bulletproof - LaRoux: This techno alt dance track is really catchy. Was a hit also in the UK. I love it and got it for free from Apple. Yes, they do occasionally give away good free music on iTunes. This one is coming on strong fast, in its third week already at #7.

The Other Side - AM: I have no idea what AM's real name is, but he is quite active on Twitter and has his own blog. Reports airplay of his songs from various regions. I like his album Future Sons & Daughters, which is a good mix of catchy sounding pop-rock. Radio stations everywhere ought to be playing this and other tracks from AM. A good fit for CHR. #2 this week on Mel's Weekly Top 20.
