Two songs make their chart debut: "Who You Love" featuring Katy Perry by John Mayer debuts at #19. "Shake" an alternative indie track comes in at #20 from The Head and The Heart. Looks like some good songs leading us into 2014.

CHART NOTES

Fitz & the Tantrums hold on to #1 for a second week with "The Walker" off their latest album More Than A Dream.

Katy Perry reamins at #2 with "Unconditionally". The track is from the album Prism. Can this be her next #1 song? I thought so last week. But so far, not. Perry also holds at #6 with her last #1 hit, "Roar" which is still hot today.

The Killers move into the top 10 at #9 this week with their latest "Just Another Girl" jumping up from last week's #11 spot. Also moving into the top 10 is the latest country hit by Luke Bryan called "That's My Kind of Night" up to #10 from last week's #12.

Two songs make their chart debut. Bulleting into the #12 spot from out of nowhere we find Kelly Clarkson and just released yuletide single "Underneath the Tree". It's the highest debut for any Christmas song ever on this chart. Will she crack the top 10 in time for the holidays?

The second chart debut song is "I Love You", an alternative rock track by a band called Said the Whale which enters the chart at #20. This song has been simmering on my iTunes ever since I found it back in October. Now it is in the top 20.

Coming soon... the Top 100 Hits of 2013.

You've heard it many times during the holiday season for almost 20 years. "All I Want For Christmas is You" was released on Mariah Carey's 4th studio album in 1994. CHART NOTES

Fitz & the Tantrums top the chart this week with their track "The Walker" from the album More Than A Dream. I've been playing this track on my iPods and iTunes ever since it was released this past May. It's great to see it top the chart this week (moving up from #2). This song should be getting wider airplay on Top 40 / AC / Alternative Rock radio the world over... unfortunately, so far as I know, it's not. Perhaps next year.

Katy Perry inches closer to #1 with her latest single "Unconditionally". From the album Prism, the track moves from #4 to #2 this week. Could she push to number one next week. Come back and find out.

Only one new song makes a debut on the Weekly Top 20. That is "Hold On" by Colbie Caillat coming in at #20.

Flashback Friday: ¿Dónde Está Santa Claus?

FLASHBACK FRIDAY on Mel's Internet Universe Music Blog

We zoom back to 1959 and this Christmas novelty song sung by 12-year old Augie Rios. My only memory of this song was when it was performed in a holiday skit with my sister Esther being the "Mamasita" during an elementary school presentation when she was in about the 2nd or 3rd grade. She was cute and memorable.

About the record itself, from the Wikipedia it reads:

Dnde Est Santa Claus? (Spanish for Where is Santa Claus?) is a novelty Christmas song. 12-year-old Augie Rios had a hit with the song in 1959 which featured the Mark Jeffrey Orchestra.[1] The 45 record single was backed with the song "Ol' Fatso (I Don't Care Who You Are Old Fatso, Get Those Reindeer Off My Roof)."

Written by George Scheck, Rod Parker, and Al Greiner, and copyrighted in 1958, the copyright was renewed and is owned by Ragtime Music. The song "Dnde Est Santa Claus?" has now been immortalized in a toy called "Animated & Musical Singing Puppy", made in Hong Kong, China, and distributed in the U.S. in 2011. The song was originally released on MGM Records' Metro label. It can now be found on various YouTube videos.

Below is one of the most touching YouTube videos made with this song. Read the caption below the video screen for more information:

"On April 21st 2007 my son Jason and My wife Elizabeth lost their lives in a car fire. Although she was able to free herself she was unable to free my unconscious son. As a result they both perished that day. Thank you to all of you who have enjoyed this video of our little boy who even after death continues to make me so very proud. Thank you for making my little Christmas miracle part of your lives. God Bless You All."

The video has been online for a number of years now.

CHART NOTES

Ylvis holds on to the #1 spot for the 2nd week with "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)". It's the biggest non-sensical song of the year. The top 3 stays the same as last week with "The Walker" by Fitz and the Tantrums holding at #2 and Lorde holding at #3 with "Royals". Katy Perry moves into the top 5 at #4 with "Unconditionally" up from #6 of last week. Her #1 hit "Roar" moves down to #6 from #5 of last week.

The Colourist' "Little Games" moves up 2 to #8 from #10. The song was at #8 about 3 weeks ago. Now it is back in its previously peaked position. Will it go any higher?

Awolnation is a late comer to this chart and their hit "Sail" finally makes it to the top 10 moving up 2 from last week's #11 to #9 this week. Sheryl Crow also moves into the top 10 at #10 with her latest, "Callin' Me When I'm Lonely" up from #12.

Three tracks make their chart debut: Selena Gomez is another late arrival to the chart as her hit "Slow Down" debuts at #18. Country star Luke Bryan debuts with his first WT20 track at #19 - " That's My Kind of Night" which has topped iTunes chart in recent days.... Finally at #20 we find New Politics and their track "Harlem". We'll see how high these debut tracks go in the coming weeks and most likely into the new year.

Which reminds me... I am now compiling the Top 100 Hits of 2013 and that will be posted before year's end.

Flashback Friday: Steely Dan - Black Friday

FLASHBACK FRIDAY on Mel's Internet Universe Music Blog

Well this is the song for the day. "Black Friday" by Steely Dan. Appropriate song for today since it kicks off the official start of the holiday season with of all things, Black Friday Sales.

Black Friday is a traditional shoppers holiday that comes on the day after Thanksgiving for consumers and retailers all over the United States. Thousands of people flock to the malls, stores and online destinations in their first attempts to meet the oncoming Christmas Day deadline of December 25. Bargains galore lead shoppers to the malls only to find that the advertised deals are long gone to the people who came earlier than you. What the stores love is that you stay and buy higher priced items. Yes!

Do you fall into that trap? I don't. I avoid the malls and stores on Black Friday. I rather stay home and eat leftover Thanksgiving turkey and listen to some great music by Steely Dan. I will do that today.

"Black Friday" was issued as a single on ABC Records in 1975. It made it to the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #37. The track is off the album Katy Lied, the 4th for the group.

CHART NOTES

I suspect that there is some deeper meaning to the story and lyrics in our #1 song this week. Ylvis' "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" has a great beat, good music and well... some nonsensical, supposedly animal noises lyrics. More than half the song have non-sensical lyrics. Not a first in the annals of pop music, but nevertheless here with us in 2013. You can view the lyrics and video in the clip included on this page. The song took several weeks to get to the #1 spot. Last week it was #2.

Ylvis replaces Lorde who had the #1 song for the past 4 weeks. "Royals" drops 2 to #3 this week.

Entering into the #2 position up from #4 of last week is Fitz & the Tantrums. Their latest track is called "The Walker". The song has been on high rotation in my iTunes ever since I got their album More Than A Dream back in May. To me this is one of the best Fitz & the Tantrum songs to date. Hopefully it gets wider airplay in the future.

Katy Perry zooms into the top 10 this week with her latest single "Unconditionally". The track enters at #6 up from #13 of last week. It is right behind her current, former #1 hit "Roar" which sits at #5. Both from her album Prism.

New entries to the top 20 this week include Owl City's holiday track "Light of Christmas" which also feature TobyMac at #19. At #20 we find rapper Eminem entring at #20. This is the first time that Eminem appears on this chart since 2000's "The Real Slim Shady". I am not an Eminem fan, hence most of his songs have been ignored over the years. The only reason this one is listed is because Rihanna shares vocals and some melody on this.

Flashback Friday - The Marmalade Cover of The Beatles' "Ob La Di, Ob La Da"

FLASHBACK FRIDAY on Mel's Internet Universe Music Blog

Most people in the United States have not heard much about the band The Marmalade even though they had 2 hit singles in the U.S. Their most well known track is "Reflections of My Life" which hit the top 40 in 1969 and peaked at #10.

After that the band did not enjoy much chart success until 1976 when another single made it to the Hot 100. That song was "Falling Apart at the Seams" which peaked at #49.

Despite not being too popular in America, The Marmalade did enjoy a long string of hit singles in the U.K. One of their most well known there is this cover of The Beatles classic "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" which in 1968 went all the way to #1 on the British charts. This is a good cover which should have become a hit in the U.S.

The song missed the mark in the U.S., but now through the wonder of YouTube, you can now listen to and watch The Marmalade cover this top hit song.

Another fast mover is "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" by Ylvis. The song leaps from #15 to #7 this week. Also breaking into the top 10 we find Relient K with Owl City and their underrated track, "That's My Jam" moving up 2 from #11 to #9.

Taylor Swift has the only new entry to the chart this week. She comes in at #20 with "Sweeter Than Fiction" off the soundtrack for the movie One Chance.

CHART NOTES

What's on the charts this week? Well for starters Avicii holds on to #1 for a 2nd week with the hit "Wake Me Up". Lana Del Rey holds at #2 for a 2nd week with "Summertime Sadness". Moving into the top 5 we find Lorde and her hit "Royals". In only 3 short weeks the record has gone from #19 to #7 and now to #3. Is number one the next stop?

The entire top 10 contains the same songs as last week except that they are in a slightly different order.

Two songs make their chart debut. A very latecomer to this chart we find AWOLNATION and their smash hit "Sail" making its debut at #19. This is one of those tracks that I did not care for much when I first got it way back in September of 2011. The song just sat in my iTunes for months until I found it, like only today after seeing it listed on several charts elsewhere. I thought, hmm... maybe I ought to buy the track but before I buy I ought to see if I have it. Low and behold there it was... in my library not assigned to any playlist. I must have bought it then and totally forgot about it. Anyway, AWOLNATION's "Sail" is at #19 this week. We'll see how far it goes in the coming weeks.

The other debut song is not even an official single as far as I know. The track is titled "The Walker". It's by Fitz and Tantrums. The track has been high on my rotation list ever since I got Fitz and the Tantrums' latest album More Than Just a Dream. One day while I was watching TV I caught this ad for Laughing Cow Light Creamy Swiss cheese wedges. In that 30 second spot, they use "The Walker". I guess that made me decide to include this track on the Weekly Top 20 at #20. It is a good track and should get more airplay all ove the world. Great song from Fitz & the Tantrums.

CHART NOTES

We have a new single at #1. Avicii peaks at the top. moving up one from #2 with "Wake Me Up" a song that mixes a number of styles to create a rather unique sounding folk-rock-dance mix. Good song. Following Avicii is Lana Del Rey and her latest single "Summertime Sadness" inching up from #3 to #2.

Capital Cities slip 2 from last week's #1 to #3 with "Safe and Sound". Katy Perry holds strong at #4 with "Roar" for a second week in a row. The song was at #1 a few weeks ago where it stayed for 4 weeks.

Wrapping up the top 5 we find Lady Gaga just getting in there from #6 to #5 with her latest single "Applause".

New to the top 10 are the following: "Royal" by Lordes zooms up from #19 to #7; "The Wire" comes in at #9 for HAIM; Coldplay's latest moves to #10 from last week's #11. That one is called "Atlas".

New to the Weekly Top 20 are 3 debut tracks. At #18 we got "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" by Ylvis; entering at #19 is Jack Johnson with his latest acoustic based track called "I Got You". Caro Emerald is back with another retro sounding single called "One Day" at #20.

CHART NOTES For October 6, 2013

Capital Cities remain "Safe and Sound" for the 2nd week in a row at #1 with their debut single... "Safe and Sound"!

Knocking on the door to #1 we find Avicii at #2 with "Wake Me Up" and Lana Del Rey at #3 with "Summertime Sadness". Both songs move up 2 points from their respective positions of #4 and #5 from last week.

Only one song moves into the top 10 this week. We find HAIM at #10 up from #11 with their debut single "The Wire". The track was pushed as a free iTunes download a few weeks ago. It is good to see some of those free iTunes tracks become hits. Several hit it big over the years including "Bulletproof" by La Roux in 2009, "Change" by Churchill and "Pompeii" by Bastille from earlier this year.

New tracks making their chart entries include "Royals" by Lorde at #19. This song is already a big hit on many other charts. Paul McCartney's latest entitled "New" also debuts on the Weekly Top 20 at #20.

CHART NOTES

Capital Cities bumps Katy Perry's "Roar" out of the #1 slot with their single "Safe and Sound". The track is a latecomer to the Weekly Top 20 and has spent several weeks on the chart before peaking with this edition at #1. Good for them. "Roar" slips one to #2.

Elton John probably has one of his biggest hits (at least for this chart) so far this century with "Home Again" moving up another point to #3. It is quite like his earlier work from the 1970s where his vocals and keyboards are front and center. His new album The Diving Board just came out this week.

New in the top 5 are Avicii with their hit "Wake Me Up" at #4 up from #6, and Lana Del Ray's "Summertime Sadness" at #5 up from #9.

Song debuts of the week: "The Mother We Share" by Chvrches at #19 and "Got a Feeling" by Los Waves at #20. We'll see how high these new entries go in the coming weeks.

CHART NOTES

Katy Perry keeps her single "Roar" on top of the chart for a 4th consecutive week. Capital Cities bumps up 1 position to take the #2 spot with "Safe and Sound". Elton John moves up again from #5 to #4 with his latest, "Home Again". His music video appears at the top of this post.

Lana Del Ray's "Summertime Sadness (Alternative Radio Mix)" moves into the top 10 from #11 to #9. This is her first top 1o hit in the WT 20. Up to now I have not been too big a fan of Del Ray's music. This one kind of breaks it out of the "boring" area for me. I like this mix.

New this week is "This is My Jam" by Relient K featuring Owl City at #19. The song is a tribute to past hits and artists from the 1990s. It reminds me somewhat of the Train album track "This'll Be My Year" which should have been released as a single. The other debut song on this week's chart if "Little Games" by The Colourist at #20.

"Roar" by Katy Perry holds the #1 spot for a 3rd consecutive week. Ellie Goulding's "Burn" holds at #2 for a second week. Will she go to #1 and replace Katy at the top? Find out next week.

Elton John lands his first top 5 hit in decades. "Home Again" from his forthcoming album The Diving Board moves up from #6 of last week to #5 this week. This is his most "classic era" sounding song in years, and prominently features Sir Elton on piano and vocals.

The fastest 2 rising songs this week belong to Lana Del Ray and her remix of "Summertime Sadness" moving up from #18 to #11 and Bastille's "Things We Lost in the Fire" up from #19 to #12. Both songs made their chart debut last week.

Speaking of debuts we find "Atlas" by Coldplay checking in at #19. The single is taken from the soundtrack album to The Hunger Games II which is expected in theaters later this year. At #20 we find the latest by Ricky Martin and "Come With Me" another in a long line of dance oriented pop hits. Martin is best known for his #1 hit of 1999, "Livin' la Vida Loca".

Fight For the Future - Time to Stop SOPA - Again

Once again our digital rights are in jeopardy. From the Fight for the Future site:

Hey,
Here’s an update on the new SOPA proposal. More than 30,000 people have already signed our petition to stop the new SOPA before it spreads. We need to get to 50,000 signatures before we deliver it to Obama next week. Only you can make that happen. Forward this email to everyone you know, and use the buttons to share:

Thanks to you, and tens of thousands of others who have already taken action, we’re hearing from our friends in DC that this latest attempt at internet censorship isn’t gaining a lot of traction.
But there are powerful interests who are spending millions of lobbying dollars to get SOPA-like legislation back on the table. We need to send a clear message to Obama *right now* that SOPA is not even an option to be discussed.
