Hawaii’s Top 40 Hits

This will be a new feature to this blog... PLAYLISTS... Embedded here from Spotify or YouTube, I will start sharing my specialized playlists here. If you have a Spotify subscription you should be able to play all of the songs in a Spotify playlist right through. It works on some browsers but not all. First up is my 1970s (with some 1960s) era music from high school days and early college that were popular tracks on local Top 40 radio stations in Hawaii such as KPOI, KKUA and on the neighbor islands, KMVI, KPUA and KHLO. These were all AM stations back in the day and they played some great regional only hits mixed in with the familiar mainline top 40 hits. 

This first list that I recently re-created from a CD that I burned years ago features some great tracks.

The cover art was used for the burned CD that I made which actually contained several different songs from what's on this list, since Spotify did not have them. Tracks like "Me Japanese Boy" by Liz Damon, "Groovin Out on Life" by The New Beats,  "Searchin'" by Cecilio and Kapono and "Remember Mary" by The Sweet Marie which are on my burned CD had to be excluded and substituted with what was/is available on Spotify.

Who can forget the wonderful hits "Oh Girl" by The Chi-Lites, "Pretty Lady" by Lighthouse or the always classic "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray?

These songs and many more are on this obsolete K-Tel collection of unforgettable hits and vinyl obscurities, yours to find at your nearest thrift shop or used record store if you're lucky!

Remember all the grooves are squeezed close together with many of the tracks severely edited for time constraints of the vinyl record format.

Editor's Note: I bought this record album for only a dollar at our local thrift shop. I always wanted to own at least one K-Tel album, despite the dubious song edits and lousy sound.

Video: Sixty Years On by Elton John

In observance of the number sixty, I bring you Elton John's "Sixty Years On". The song was first released in 1970 on Elton John's first American released album. "Sixty Years On" was the song that lead off side 2 of the vinyl version. The LP contained the following songs:

Side one

This is the album that put him on the map of popular and rock music for the next 50+ years. This album and several more that followed up to 1975 is considered to be part of the singer-songwriter classic Elton John album collection of the 1970s. The songs were well written by Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin which finds Britain's most celebrated piano man in great voice with a solid group of backing musicians that enhanced his music through that era.

The album contains his signature track "Your Song" as well as FM classic rock favorites "Take Me To the Pilot", "Border Song" and "The King Must Die". That said my favorites are "The Cage: and the tender "I Need You To Turn To."

"Sixty Years On" is a beautiful symphonic like piece that starts off side 2 of the LP. The song is re-created in this 2002 video shot at The Royal Opera House in London England. Enjoy!

Yep, got 100% on this quiz that is way too easy. I grew up in the 1970s, listened to a lot of music on AM and FM radio. KKUA, KPOI, KORL and KIKI were the top 40 radio stations of the day that played so many of these hits. I bought many of them on 45s and LP records. Made my first mixed cassette tapes. Those were the cool days.

Flashback Friday: Steely Dan - Black Friday

Well this is the song for the day. "Black Friday" by Steely Dan. Appropriate song for today since it kicks off the official start of the holiday season with of all things, Black Friday Sales.

Black Friday is a traditional shoppers holiday that comes on the day after Thanksgiving for consumers and retailers all over the United States. Thousands of people flock to the malls, stores and online destinations in their first attempts to meet the oncoming Christmas Day deadline of December 25. Bargains galore lead shoppers to the malls only to find that the advertised deals are long gone to the people who came earlier than you. What the stores love is that you stay and buy higher priced items. Yes!

Do you fall into that trap? I don't. I avoid the malls and stores on Black Friday. I rather stay home and eat leftover Thanksgiving turkey and listen to some great music by Steely Dan. I will do that today.

"Black Friday" was issued as a single on ABC Records in 1975. It made it to the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #37. The track is off the album Katy Lied, the 4th for the group.
