CHART NOTES:

Maroon 5 takes over the #1 spot for the 2nd time this year with their latest single "One More Night". The track is from their latest album, Overxposed which was released last month. "One More Night" zoomed up this chart and hit the top in only 4 weeks. It debut at #18 then moved to #10 and last week it was #3. This week it's #1. Will it stay there for a long time?

That's the question of the hour since we have a very strong and high debuting single this week. Yes, Taylor Swift's latest pop country single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" makes its entry into the Weekly Top 20 at #12. It is the highest debuting song of the week and possibly of the year so far. The song is already #1 on a number of charts throughout the world. Will it go to #1 here? Time will tell.

Of course for everything that goes up, something has to come down. Owl City's single "Good Time" managed to hold on to #1 for only a week. The track which features Carly Rae Jepsen falls back to #2. It's still a good song and I expect it to hang around in the top 10 for a few more weeks.

Other drops include "Higher Than The Clouds" by Anuhea which peaked at #4 last week and now falls back to #7. Same for The Killers' "Runaways". That track peaked at #5 and this week it drops down to #9.

New to the top 10 this week Bahamas' and his track "Caught Me Thinking". The tracks moves from #12 to #10. It's one of those tracks that is not getting airplay or chart listings anywhere except here... could be a big hit if radio or someone played it.

The other debut song at #20 this week is "Ho Hey" by The Lumineers. I don't know much about the band except the song was a free track from Apple this past May. They kind of sound like Mumford & Sons.

CHART NOTES

Jessie J, who hails from England tops this week's chart with her debut hit single, "Price Tag". The song has been steadily climbing he chart and this week, nudges in from #2 to #1. It's a great pop song with a tasteful rap thrown in by rapper B.o.B. who I have been told is known for his radio friendly hits. You can listen to this song and check the video out below.

Dengue Fever and Lady Ga Ga make new entries into the top 5 with their respective singles, "Cement Slippers" and "Born This Way", checking in at #4 and #5, up 3 points each. I really love "Cement Slippers". I'm not too cool about "Born This Way". Lady Ga Ga has made better records.

New songs making it to the top 20 this week include "From a Table Away" by new country artist Sunny Sweeney. That record checks in at #19. At number 20 is Rihanna with a dance track called "Who's That Chick".

Fastest rising song this week is Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull's single "On the Floor" moving up from #18 to #11. Certainly this song will be in the top 10 by next week. It already topped the digital singles chart at both iTunes and Amazon.com.

CHART NOTES:

Two songs make their debut on the top 20 this week. They are "Brand New Day" by Lindsey Ray with Tim Meyers. This song might be familiar to many TV viewers as one of the current themes for a series of TARGET store ads. "Brand New Day" bows in at #19.

The second debut song this week is by Bruno Mars. This guy grew up in Hawaii and started his musical career as a kid impersonating Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Today he has a nationwide top 10 hit called "Just The Way You Are". It marks its chart appearance here for the first week at #17.

Taylor Swift is this week's fastest moving artist. Her latest countryfied pop hit "Mine" shoots up from #19 to #8 this week, an eleven point leap. Future #1?

Moving into the top 10 is Katy Perry with "Teenage Dream" moving up 5 from #10 to #15. Holding on to #1 for the 4th straight week is Maroon 5 and "Misery"

Maroon 5 holds on to the #1 spot for the 2nd consecutive week with "Misery". Scissor Sisters move up 2 from #4 to #2 with "Fire With Fire". Justine Bennett holds at #3 with "Heavy Feeling" and Nikki Yanofsky moves up from #5 to #4. She held the #1 spot for a few weeks in late July and early August. New to the top 5 this week is Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" up from #7 to #5.

Katie Perry debuts at #19 with her latest single, "Teenage Dream", title track from her latest album. Also making a debut is Fitz & the Tantrums and their single "MoneyGrabber" at #20.

CHART NOTES

Maroon 5 breaks into the #1 spot with their lates single, "Misery". The track moved up 2 points from #3 to #1. La Roux holds at #2 for a 3rd week with "Bulletproof". Justine Bennett moves up 1 from #4 to #3 with "Heavy Feeling". It's one of the most underrated tracks on the top 20 this week. More charts should list it and it would be a great add to AC radio.

Breaking into the Top 5 for the first time are the Scissor Sisters with their single "Fire With Fire" up 2 from #6 to #4. Holding at #5 for another week is Nikki Yanofsky and her former #1 hit "Cool My Heels". And making the big drop this week from #1 to #6 is 3OH!3 and "My First Kiss".

The only song to make a debut on the chart is "I Saw the Rain" by Lovers & Poets at #20.

CHART NOTES:

Nikki Yanofsky tops the chart for a second consecutive week with her single "Cool My Heels". It's a great AC/jazz track. Should be #1 on everyone's chart.

"My First Kiss" by 3OH!3 moves from #10 to #6. Definitely will be a top 5 hit. Number 1?

Fast mover: "Misery" by Maroon 5. Up 8 points from #18 to #10 in only the track's second week. I don't really care for the track's mildly violent video.

Three songs debut: At #18 is the latest hit by Carrie Underwood, "Undo It". Debi Nova's "Drummer Boy" comes in at #19; and all the way from Hawaii, it's Anuhea with her latest single "Come Over Love" at #20.

It is not too often that I celebrate a song that has so far peaked at #10. This one is worth mentioning and listening to by Justine Bennett. It's called "Heavy Feeling" and is out now on the Authentic Music label. Check out the song by clicking on the graphic above.

CHART NOTES:

Neon Trees hold the #1 spot for the second week in a row with "Animal". The video sold me on this song when I saw it about 5 weeks ago on YouTube. It's still great today.

Nikki Yanofsky's "Cool My Heels" moves up a point from #3 to #2. Could be coming in at number 1 next week I think... "Pray For You" by Jaron and The Long Road to Love also moves up a point from #5 to #4, with Barenaked Ladies following behind, up from #6 to #5 with "Every Subway Car".

Hot risers this week are Katy Perry with Snoop Dog and their hit "California Gurls" up 4 points going from #11 to #7. The song is #1 on several charts. Also hot is Shakira moving from #19 to #12 with the "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" theme song to the ongoing World Cup Football (Soccer) games taking place in South Africa.

Caro Emerald is going back up not once but twice. Her former #1 song which sagged two weeks ago at #12 moved up to #10 last week and this week is back at #8. Meanwhile her second single "A Night Like This" makes its debut at #19.

La Roux returns to the Weekly Top 20 with a song that topped this chart last fall. "Bulletproof" is getting listed on a lot of charts these days and garnering a fair share of airplay, enough to have it re-chart here at #18. The song was last charted on December 27, 2009. It was #1 for a few weeks in November 2009.

This Week's Golden Oldies

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass took their Spanish influenced instrumental pop sound to the top of the charts starting in 1962 with "The Lonely Bull". Listen to the song by clicking on the video graphic above.

Some of the Coolest Songs...

Some of the coolest songs can come from advertising. The most recent example is the 30 second spot for the Lincoln MKS sports luxury car. Ford/Lincoln Mercury is using Shiny Toy Guns remake of the old Peter Schilling track "Major Tom". I think it is a great ad and if I had the cash, I'd buy the car too. However I am satisfied with owning the song and watching this short video clip.

Lincoln-Mercury is also using a remake of the old David Bowie song "Space Oddity" done this time by singer Cat Power for another Lincoln MKS ad. It seems like the auto maker's current ad campaign revolves around a spacey theme. I like the originals and remakes of both songs and have added them to my vast iTunes library of music.

Shannon Hurley hits the #1 spot on Mel's Weekly Top 20 after spending several weeks climbing the chart. The track is a staple at The SixtyOne music website and elsewhere online should be getting national airplay on modern rock, pop and AC radio formats. The track is that good. The Young Rascals

THE YOUNG RASCALS

The Young Rascals were a very popular rock n roll band in Hawaii from the mid 1960s to early 1970s. They are well known for the #1 hits "Good Lovin'", "Groovin'" and "People Got to Be Free" as well as a number of other top 40 hits including "How Can I Be Sure", "Come On Up," and "You Better Run." They received extensive AM top 40 radio airplay in the day that went beyond their hit singles. Several of the Rascals' album tracks and B-sides became huge local hits and were listed on Hawaii radio charts. Album and B-side Rascals' hits included "Mustang Sally," "Sueño", "A Place in the Sun," "Almost Home" and "My Hawaii."

"My Hawaii" is probably the Young Rascals' most popular song in the islands. It topped several radio station charts in the 1960s and early 1970s compilations. The track is on The Rascals' album Once Upon a Dream which also features the hit single "It's Wonderful". For years the album had been out of print until it was re-issued to CD in 2007. "My Hawaii" is also available on the compilation CD Uncle Tom's Top Twelve Hits which was released on CD in 1998.

"My Hawaii" was covered by the local band Fabulous Krush in the early 1980s.

Neko Case sings her latest hit "People Got a Lotta Nerve" (currently at #8 on the Weekly Top 20) in this week's video showcase feature. The song is from Neko Case's new album Middle Cyclone. The video was recorded for QTV.

Shannon Hurley's "California" makes its debut on the Weekly Top 20 at #18 this week. It's a wonderful new track by a talented and largely undiscovered singer. I read she is popular on MySpace.com.



The NuRu's track "Natalie" is a longtime and largely ignored fixture at TheSixtyOne.com. I think this is a terrific song that in some ways reminds me of a Hootie and the Blowfish track with underpinnings of The Corrs' "When the Stars Go Blue" in song structure.



If there was a song that paid tribute to the late George Harrison, this could be it. Darrin Kohavi's voice reminds me of the late George as he cites The Beatles and the late Jim Croce as his musical influences. He does a good cover of Croce's "Operator" and has released an EP a few weeks back. This is a song that I am certain will reach my Weekly Top 20 soon.



Chanel Campbell's track "Cry Cry Cry" should be a radio standard someday. It is newly discovered and not too many people have heard it.

Frankly all 4 tracks should be regular staples on adult contemporary radio.

Super Golden Oldies

Many of my favorite songs come from my growing up years in late elementary and early junior high school. Songs made famous by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night, Dusty Springfield and countless others flooded the airwaves in the late 1960s to early 1970.
