CHART NOTES

Gotye's hit "Somebody I Used to Know" that has been bouncing around on many charts in the past 6 to 8 months finally breaks the hold Train had on the top spot and becomes the newest track to hit #1 on the Weekly Top 20. This song has an interesting video that also features Kimbra. See that one on the top of this post.

And yes, after 7 weeks of holding the #1 spot, Train slips to #2 this week with "Drive By".

Rounding out the top 3 we find Katy Perry at #5 with "Part of Me," Matt Cardle at #4 with "Amazing" and Fun at #3 with "We Are Young". All songs made a one point move up the chart.

Three songs make their chart debut. They are "Dancing Away With My Heart" a country crossover hit by Lady Antebellum at #18, "One Life" by James Morrison at #19 and "Love Bites (So Do I)" by rockers Halestorm at #20.

CHART NOTES

Train locks on to the #1 spot again for a 7th consecutive week with "Drive By". We've gone without a new #1 song for almost 2 months. This song ties last year's most long stay at #1.... Late last fall Coldplay held on to #1 for 7 straight weeks with "Paradise". That song turned out to be the #1 song of the year on the year end Top 100 of 2011. Can Train accomplish the same feat for 2012?

Holding patterns: At #2 we find Gotye and Kimbra with "Somebody That I Used to Know," now there for the 2nd week in a row. At #3 we see The Asteroids Galaxy Tour and "Heart Attack" for a 2nd consecutive week. The song has compiled at least 4 non-consecutive weeks at the #3 position. Can it go any higher or is it doomed to be a #3 hit forever?

Be sure to check out Katy Perry's latest hit and video above. "Part of Me" moves up 2 from #8 to #6 this week.

Movers: Making some significant headway up the chart we find the following songs: "Glad You Came" by The Wanted moves up from #16 to #9 this week, a 7 point jump. Also jumping up 7 points is Carly Rae Jepsen's single "Call Me Maybe" moving from #17 to #10. Making a 6 point jump from #19 to #13 is Adele and her single "Rumour Has It".

There are no debut songs on the chart. Several songs are headed on a downward spiral and are likely to depart the top 20 by next week. Among them are "Hang It Up" by the Ting Tings at #18, "These Times" by SafetySuitat #19 and "Do It Our Way" by Alesha Dixon. All had good chart runs and should be listed in the year end chart for 2012 come this December.

CHART NOTES

Train holds on to the #1 spot for a 6th consecutive week with their latest hit "Drive By". Gotye's "Somebody I Used To Know" moves up a point from #3 to #2. The track features singer Kimbra near the end. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour move up one point from #4 to #3 with "Heart Attack". The song slid a point last week. I guessMadonna's slip this week made up for that. She is at #4 with "Give Me All Your Luvin'" which until last week, held the #2 spot for 4 weeks in a row. Rounding out the top 5 we find Fun and their single, "We Are Young" holding at #5 for a second week.

Elsewhere on the top 20, we find incremental moves throughout the chart, either up or down by the week's popular songs.

Two debut tracks this week include Adele's latest single "Rumour Has It" at #19 while Nicki Minaj enters with her dance/rap hit "Starships" at #20. How high these songs go is anyone's guess.

CHART NOTES

Train holds on to the #1 spot for a 4th consecutive week with their latest hit "Drive By". Madonna holds at #2 for a 3rd consecutive week with "Give Me All Your Luvin'".

Breaking into the top 10 we find Olly Murs at #9 with "Dance The Night Away" while Alesha Dixon moves up to #10 with her Weightwatchers promotional song and video "Do It Our Way (Play)". Both songs make 2 point moves into the top 10.

Quick movers below the top 10 we find SafetySuit at #12 with "These Times" up 5 from #17 of last week. Following them is Katy Perry with her latest, "Part of Me" moving up 5 from #18 to #13 this week. Just a few notches behind we find Outasight movin up 5 from #20 last week to #15 and their hit "Tonight is the Night". It would be safe to say that all 3 tracks are headed for top 10 land.

Droppers this week include Katy Perry's former #1 record "The One That Got Away" plunging from #8 last week to #16 this week. Another plunger is Kelly Clarkson whose hit "Stronger" peaked at #9 last week. This week it fell to #17. Looks like the outs for both of these as well as Nickelback's "When We Stand Together" at #18.

Two songs make their debut. Check out the chart above.

Train holds on to the #1 spot for a 3rd consecutive week with their latest hit "Drive By".
The top 4 stays exactly the same as last week with positions #2, #3 and #4 holding the same with Madonna, The Ting Tings and Asteroids Galaxy Tour maintaining their status quo. The new entry into the top 5 is The Shins and their latest "Simple Song".

In an amzing leap, Matt Cardle moves up 6 points to claim the #10 spot with his single, "Amazing". Wow!

Two debuts this week... Katy Perry is at #18 with "Part of Me". Her recent #1 single "The One That Got Away" is still in the top 10 at #8 this week.

The other debut is "Tonight is the Night" by Outasight at #20. It's their first single to chart here. Don't know much about the artist, but the song is decent enough to be listed.

CHART NOTES

The question of the week is will Madonna be taking the #1 spot next week with her hit "Give Me All Your Luvin'"? The record has sprung into the top 5 fairly quickly going from its debut position of #20 three weeks ago to #9, to last week's #4 and this week at #2. The other question s whether or not Train can hold on to #1 for a 3rd week next week? Train is currently at #1 for the second week in a row with their latest hit "Drive By". Care to venture an answer? Email me!

Elsewhere on the top 20 we see some movement in the lower rungs of the chart. Gotye breaks into the top 10 with "Somebody I used to Know" moving up from #12 to #9. Kelly Clarkson finally makes it into the top 10 at #10 with "Stronger". She hasn't been all that successful on this chart. We'll see if this song will have any further upward movement.

Speaking of upward: Fun springs from #18 of last week to #11 this week with their single "We Are Young". Matt Cardle moves up from #19 to #16 this week with his latest, "Amazing". Meanwhile his second hit to make it to this top 20 falls from #10 to #17. That would be "Starlight". Kind of an abbreviated run for this song. Sorry.

Only one debut this week and that goes to Safetysuit. They check in at #20 with "These Times".

Toby Keith's former #1 record "Red Solo Cup" is on the wane and may be out of here by next week. His record drops from #8 to #14. Was a good run considering the track went to #1 and made its debut on the last week of 2011. "Cup" is still a fun song and hilarious video.

CHART NOTES

Train cruises to the top of the chart with their latest hit "Drive By". They last hit the chart with the #1 record "Hey Soul Sister" in 2010.

Madonna takes residence in the top 5 at #4 with her latest "Give Me All Your Luvin'" featuring rappers M.I.A.and Nicki Minaj. The song was featured in this year's Super Bowl halftime show. The track is from her upcoming album MDNA.

Matt Cardle stalls at #10 with "Starlight". His last single, "Run For Your Life" peaked at #1 during the last week of 2011 and the first week of 2012. It just fell off the chart, and is now replaced with his latest single, "Amazing" coming in for the first week at #19.

Also debuting on the chart is Fun, and their track "We Are Young" at #18. The song hit #1 on both Amazon and iTunes charts.

The other debut song this week at #20 is "Deep Sleep" by Nabiha. And that folks, is a quick synopsis of the Weekly Top 20 for this week.

CHART NOTES

Katy Perry holds on to the #1 spot for a second consecutive week with her single, "The One That Got Away". Check out the music video at the top. The song is the latest top 10 hit from her album Teenage Dream. Katy Perry had the 2nd most highest rated song on Mel's Weekly Top 20 Top 100 Hits of 2011 chart with "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)". That record stayed at #1 for 6 weeks.

Holding at #2 for a 2nd week is Nickelback and their latest single "When We Stand Together."

The song at #3 has grown on me quite fast. It's "Drive By" from Train, their latest single. The video is cool... gotta love the cars and of course the woman is pretty too. "Drive By" cruises up from #6 to #3 this week.

Biggest mover in the top 20 is definitely by Madonna. She makes a huge leap by moving from her debut spot at #20 of last week to #9 this week with "Give Me All Your Luvin'". She is joined on this single by contemporaries Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Way down at #19 we see one of the odd debut songs... Olly Murs' "Dance With Me Tonight" makes its second debut on the top 20 at #19 this week. The song fell off the chart last week after debuting at #20 two weeks ago. So far it has spent 2 weeks on the chart, and has made its debut twice, though this week it is marked as a "return". We'll see if this song can push some forward momentum.

Falling off from the chart this week is Coldplay's "Paradise". The song spent an incredible 22 weeks on the Weekly Top 20, peaking at #1 for 7 weeks late last year, making it the longest lived #1 track for 2011 and putting it on the top of the chart, numero uno for the Top 100 Hits of 2011. Now Coldplay is back with their latest single off the album Mylo Xyloto. This time their track "Charlie Brown" makes its chart debut at #20. It's the latest of 4 singles to be released from that album.

CHART NOTES

Katy Perry bumps Toby Keith out of the number 1 slot with her latest single "The One That Got Away" off theTeenage Dream album. Record's been out for nearly 2 years and it is still yielding top 10, much less #1 hits. Wow.

Moving up from #4 to #2 is Nickelback. Their latest single "When We Stand Togehter" could be a contender for #1. Not too far behind Nickelback we find Train, who have moved 5 points up from #11 to #6 this week with "Drive By". Will be interesting to see where these songs go.
Inbetween them we find some venerable top 10 hits including Mayer Hawthorne's broken hearted drama, "The Walk" moving up from #6 to #4, The Ting Tings up from #7 to #5 with "Hang It Up." And yes, "Red Solo Cup" is still in the top 5 at #3 after holding on to #1 for 2 weeks.

Breaking into the Top 10 we find Asteroids Galaxy Tour with their latest, "Heart Attack" up from #14 to #9 this week.

The only debut song comes from Madonna who had a successful but not without controversy, half time show at the recently completed Super Bowl football game. There she added "Give Me All Your Luvin'" (debuting at #20) into her mix of danceable top 40 tunes.

CHART NOTES

Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup", the goofiest country song of recent years, holds for the 2nd week at #1. Right behind Keith is Katy Perry, whose lastest single, "The One That Got Away" inches up from #3 to #2 this week. Top of the charts next week? Maybe.

A big break into the top 5 is Nickelback, whose latest rock anthem "When We Stand Together" bolts from #9 of last week to #4 this week.

That is still not the biggest rising song of the week. Honors for that feat goes to Train and their latest single "Drive By". That song climbs from its debut spot of #19 last week to #11 this week.

Three songs make their chart debuts: At #18 we find Kelly Clarkson returning in fine form with her latest "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)", Gotye at #19 with "Somebody I Used to Know" and Olly Murs at #20 with "Dance With Me Tonight".

We have 4 former #1 songs still on the chart, all of them dropping.... Dropping from #2 to #3 is Adele and "Someone Like You" which held the top spot for only 1 week two weeks ago. This week it drops 1 from #2 to #3. At #8 we find Matt Cardle with "Run For Your Life," followed by Bruno Mars "It Will Rain" at #9. Dropping out of the top 10 after many weeks there (including 7 at #1) is Coldplay with their huge hit "Paradise". It moves 2 points down from #10 last week to #12 this week. Matt Cardle and Coldplay have new singles waiting in the wings to replace these veteran hits.

CHART NOTES

The goofiest song on the chart has made it to the top. Yes, Toby Keith's #1 country music hit "Red Solo Cup", a silly drinking song with an equally silly video, has climbed to the top... the pinnacle of popularity. Numero uno. Number 1 for this week on Mel's Weekly Top 20. Haven't heard a drinking song this funny since Hank Williams' "There a Tear in My Beer" and Don Ho's "Tiny Bubbles". This song is up there among "99 Bottles of Beer" as one of the funniest, and most memorable of drinking songs. A CMA in Toby Keith's future? Has he already won one? I certainly don't know.

By the way... I don't drink which makes this song way out of left field for me. Huh!

Elsewhere on the chart we see Katy Perry closing in on the top with her #3 record this week, "The One That Got Away". It's the follow-up to her immensely popular "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" hit single of last year which went to #2 on the year end Top 100 for 2011.

Nickelback's rocker "When We Stand Together" breaks into the top 10 this week at #9. It moves up from last week's #12 position. Good song. Should go higher.

Two song debut this week. At #19 we find the latest by Train called "Drive By". Entering at #20 this week are The Shins with "Simple Song". Both are great and should go high on this chart.

CHART NOTES

Adele has hit the #1 position with her second single "Someone Like You". This song is a late comer to the Top 20 having peaked on many charts throughout the world. It is still listed on many others and remains a best selling single track in the online world. The track is taken from Adele's album 21.

Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup", a funny, party country song moves up another 4 points from #7 to #3 this week. Could Adele's run at #1 be short lived? Check this chart next week to see where Toby Keith goes.

The Ting Tings' make it into the top 10 with their latest track. Checking in at #10 up 2 is "Hang It Up". It's video appears below. Good song.

Chart debuts this week from Asteroids Galaxy Tour and their latest "Heart Attack" at #19 (with "Major" still on at #11) and Alesha Dixon with "Doing It Our Way (Play)" at #20. Looks like these 2 tracks could be big hits on this chart.

CHART NOTES

Bruno Mars holds the #1 spot for the 2nd week with his latest hit, "It Will Rain". I don't know if it is the perfect song for the rainy season or not, but I am sure fame and fortune is not raining on Mars' career!

Big movers of the week include Toby Keith as his hit "Red Solo Cup" moves up 4 from #11 to break into the top 10 at #7. This is one of the most funny country songs I've heard.

Another big mover is Katy Perry. Her latest single off the Teenage Dream album moves up 8 points from #17 to #9 this week. Can this go to #1 as her last hit "Last Friday Night (TGIF)"?

Two songs make their debut on the top 20. The latest from Neon Trees bows in at #19 this week. Sounds like "Everybody Talks" could be another biggie for this rock group from Utah. Debuting at #20 is "Starlight" by Matt Cardle. It's his second single to make it to the top 20. His first, "Run For Your Life" peaked at #1 in December and is still on the chart this week at #3.

CHART NOTES

Bruno Mars goes to #1 with his latest single "It Will Rain". The song moves up from #2 after spending several weeks there. Following Mars is Adele with her single "Someone Like You" which moves up one point from #3 to #2. Will she make it to #1? Her last single, "Rolling in the Deep" got only as far as #2 on the Weekly Top 20 last year. That song however dominated other charts for most of 2011.

Elsewhere on the chart most songs only got minimal upward movement, or none at all. The song that makes the most significant move up for the week is Toby Keith's novelty country tune, "Red Solo Cup", which in its 3rd week on this chart, bolts from #17 to #11. Top 10 is definite by next week. See the video below. It's funny.

The only debut song this week is by Christina Perri. It's called "A Thousand Years" and makes it at the #20 spot. Ms. Perri has enjoyed much chart success here. Her last charted single, "Jar of Hearts" got as high as #8 in 2010 and the follow-up single "Arms" did not make the top 20 last year.

Matt Cardle's "Run For Your Life" has dropped from #1 to #3. This should have been a bigger hit on other charts and U.S. radio. Unfortunately it has yet to click with U.S. audiences. Looks like the song may be on its way out.

CHART NOTES

Matt Cardle holds on to the #1 spot with "Run For Your Life" for a 3rd week in a row. Bruno Mars holds at #2 with "It Will Rain" for another week. Moving up to #3 we find Adele with "Someone Like You". Coldplay holds down the #4 song with their former #1 "Paradise," which also turned out to be the #1 song of the year on Mel's Weekly Top 20 Top 100 Hits of 2011 chart. Check it out.

Dev creeps into the top 5 with "In the Dark", up from last week's #6.

Most of the other songs on the chart notched small one or two point gains from the previous week.

The song that moves the most is "Red Solo Cup" by Toby Keith, a country song that moves from #20 to #17 this week. It's a fun song that crossed over from the country side.

Two debut songs include Katy's Perry's "The One That Got Away" at #19 while Nickelback bows in at #20 with "When We Stand Together".
