Mel's Top 20 Hits So Far of 2023.

OK... Posting of the weekly Current Top 20 charts are not happening here.... at least on this blog's main pages. I tried, but am utterly a failure here.

That said, both Mel's Current Top 20 Chart and The Country 5 + 5 Chart are regularly posted on their own pages within the confines of this blog site. You can find links to the latest charts by accessing them at the right hand column on this and every blog page here.

I will eventually create bigger graphics with links going to those pages on the blog's right hand columns.

Stay tuned.

Resuming our blog, it is time to kind of re-cap the top 20 songs so far that have made it on Mel's Current Top 20 chart. Not surprisingly Tom MacDonald and his long running hit "Ghost" tops the half-way chart so far this year at #1.

CHART NOTES

Four songs make their debut this week. They include the latest by OneRepublic, "Run" and Olivia Rodrigo's third single, "Good 4 U." "Run" is the high debut of the week starting at #16 and "Good 4 U" lists at #18. Bringing up positions #19 and #20 are two indie songs, both from YouTube.

Olivia Rodrigo has the #1 Billboard Hot 100 song "Good 4 U" @ #18 here.

The first at #19 is by IMY2, who have made a name for themselves by covering a whole variety of cover songs on the video streaming service for the past few years. They've also released about a dozen original songs. "Kiss" is IMY2's second single to chart on Mel's Current Top 20, the first being "Breakfast in Bed" which peaked at #8 earlier this year. "Kiss" has a good pop/reggae vibe to it and could become IMY2's breakout success.

IMY2 - "Kiss" @ #19

The last of the debut songs at #20 is by a kid's rock band who have tackled a sensitive topic with their original composition. "Racist, Sexist Boy" is a raw punk rock song filmed at a library by the kid group The Linda Lindas. All I can say about this one is that it's a scorcher! Wow!

The Linda Lindas "Racist, Sexist Boy" @ #20

Elsewhere on the chart, the top 4 records stay the same as they were last week with The Weeknd sticking at #1 for a 4th week with "Save Your Tears" (remix version with Ariana Grande), compiling a 6 week run at #1 if you count the original version of the song that topped this chart earlier in the year.

It looks like Rina Sawayama's "Chosen Family", a duet with Elton John, is stalled at #2. Taylor Swift's "Mr. Perfectly Fine" is mired at #3 for another week, while Silk Sonic holds on to #4 again with their former #1 song "Leave the Door Open."

Katy Perry has the biggest mover with "Electricity" as that song leaps into the Top 10 at #10 from last week's #17 debut.

CHART NOTES

Daft Punk gets another lucky week at #1 as his hit "Get Lucky" featuring Pharrell Williams holds at #1 for the 5th consecutive week, thereby keeping Robin Thicke's hit "Blurred Lines" out of the top and stuck at #2 for a second week in a row. What will happen next week between these two uptempo, rather danceable hits?

Or could country music's Darius Rucker pull a surprise and move "Wagon Wheel" to the top spot? This week that song edges up another notch from #4 to #3. Rucker is followed by Blondfire and their hit "Waves" at #4, up from last week's #6. It's the best alternative rock song this year since Churchill's "Change" which this week fell off the chart.

A big jump this week for Selena Gomez. Her latest single "Come & Get It" leaps from last week's #19 debut position to #9 this week. That is a fast moving 10 point climb. She is headed for top 5 territory soon.

New on the chart this week is "Wasting All These Tears" by new country singer Cassadee Pope at #19 and "Pompeii" by Bastille at #20.

The rest of the chart contains the usual suspects that are either going up or down. This chart is also published at M4B Charts Central.

CHART NOTES:

Looks like 2012 is ending about the same way it started with Bruno Mars back on top of the charts. Early this year Mr. Mars was at #1 with "It Will Rain" which held the top spot for 2 weeks in January. Now Bruno is on top again with his latest single "Locked Out of Heaven" a track off his latest album Unorthodox Jukebox.

This means Rihanna's "Diamonds", last week's #1 song fell to #2 after a three week run on top. Holding at #3 are The Lumineers with "Ho Hey". Also holding at #4 is Ellie Goulding and "Anything Could Happen". Fun breaks into the top 5 with their latest single "Carry On". That record moves up 2 from #7 to #5. It is the latest single off their album Some Nights, which saw the title song go to #1 earlier this year.

Colbie Caillat has the best new Christmas song of the season. I think her single track "Christmas in the Sand" certainly captures the feel of the spirit for those of us who live in areas with no snow... like Hawaii... where Christmas can be spent in the sand of Waikiki, Kailua, Ala Moana, Hapuna or many other beaches throughout the islands. "Christmas in the Sand" moves up from #11 to #7 this week. Good song... definitely.

Two songs make their debut into the top 20 this week.

At #19 we find Taylor Swift charting with her latest single off the album Red. Fact is several singles have already been released from her Red album. On this chart so far, the only one to make it until this week is "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" which held the #1 spot for several weeks this past fall. The second single to be listed now is "I Knew You Were Trouble," at #19 which is another pop flavored country track that is certain to be a big seller as we move into the new year.

Finally at #20 I have the record that almost came out of nowhere to make its debut on this chart. A week ago while I was listening to the "Coast to Coast AM" radio talk show with Ian Punnett, one of the bumper songs he played caught my attention. It is "Clouds" by 17 year old Zach Sobiech, a dying cancer patient of Lakeland, Minnesota, who is turning to music - writing and performing songs as a way to say goodbye to his friends and family before his time comes. Zach's music was heard by a radio station executive who knew enough people in the local music community to help Zach professionally record his music. The result is the "Clouds" music video, single and a new album. Read more about it at Zach's YouTube video link. "Clouds" is one of the most touching and heartfelt songs to come out this year. God will bless Zach for the gift of music he is leaving behind.

CHART NOTES

Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" nudges itself back to #1 after falling to #2 last week. This is the song's 5th week at #1 but not consecutively. Dropping out and back up to the top is a chart rarity here.

Meanwhile The Wanted's "Glad You Came" is definitely on a fall... after peaking at #1 last week, we find the single track at #5 with other songs moving into the top 5 or going higher. Most notable are "Payphone" by Maroon 5 at the #2 spot up from #5, and "Watchin You Watch Him" by Eric Hutchinson at #4 up from #9 of last week. Any of those 2 songs could be at the top soon.

Debuts include "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction at #17 and Karmin's "Brokenhearted" at #20.

Katy Perry holds on to the #1 spot for the 2nd week in a row with "Teenage Dream'". The song is off her album of the same title and is the latest in a string of top 10 hits for the young songstress.

Moving up from #3 to #2 is Bruno Mars, a former student here in Hawaii and child Elvis impersonator with "Just the Way You Are". The song has topped the Billboard charts and may be headed in the same direction here.

Plain White T's break into the top 5 with "Rhythm of Love" up 2 from #6 to #4. It is the latest in a successful string of softer AC rock.

Rihanna makes a leap from #18 to #10 with her latest "Only Girl in the World". She is closely followed by Selena Gomez & the Scene's "A Year Without Rain" moving up from #20 to #11. Both songs made their chart debuts last week.

Justine Bennett moves up 1 from #4 to #3 with "Heavy Feeling". It's one of the most underrated tracks on the top 20 this week. More charts should list it and it would be a great add to AC radio.

Breaking into the Top 5 for the first time are the Scissor Sisters with their single "Fire With Fire" up 2 from #6 to #4. Holding at #5 for another week is Nikki Yanofsky and her former #1 hit "Cool My Heels". And making the big drop this week from #1 to #6 is 3OH!3 and "My First Kiss".

The only song to make a debut on the chart is "I Saw the Rain" by Lovers & Poets at #20.

CHART NOTES:

Lady Ga Ga holds the #1 spot for the 3rd week in a row with "Alejandro".

Jaron and The Long Road to Love move into the top 5 with "Pray For You". The track enters at #5 moving up 1 point. The song is not about religion! The song is also being played on country radio. I consider it more of a mainstream pop tune suitable for top 40 and AC radio.

Smashing Pumpkins continue their steady climb moving up 4 from #10 to #6 this week. "A Stitch in Time" is beginning to sound more and more like a top 5 and possibly even a #1 hit to me.

Three songs fell off the chart this week. Two of them were former #1's. Gone are "Hey Soul Sister" by Train and "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum. "Need You Now" topped the charts for 8 weeks this year and was on the top 20 since last November. A very long chart run for this huge, country crossover pop hit. Lady Antebellum is still on the chat with "American Honey" which peaked at #5 last week and is down 2 to #7 this week.

The third song that fell off was "Breakeven" by The Script. That song got as high as #2 and held that spot for a few weeks.

Replacing those songs are the following debuts: "We Are a Lighthouse" by The Rocketboys at #18, "Naturally" by Selena Gomez and The Scene at #19, and "Animal" by Neon Trees at #20. Neon Trees also have our new video showcase track which you can listen to and view right here.
