Best of 2023: Mel’s Spotify Wrap

 Spotify Wrap 2023

I became a paid Spotify subscriber after using the service off and on in the free ad supported tier since 2011. What prompted me to subscribe to Spotify is the fact that they have a very deep and up to date library of more than 90 million songs, many of which I will never listen to.

I love the fact that I can create as many custom playlists as I want to on Spotify and share them with anyone with the link or an embed to a website. I have more than 250 playlists that cover many music genres and eras. Check them out at my Spotify Profile page.

Like last year, Spotify issued their annual "Spotify Wrap" which is a compilation of the most played tracks from their library to my username macprohawaii. For 2023 my top 5 artists were 1. The Beatles 2. Ed Sheeran 3. Lewis Capaldi 4. The Rolling Stones and 5. Taylor Swift. "Angry" by The Rolling Stones was my most played song on Spotify.

Here for your listening pleasure is my Spotify Wrap playlist and brief stats.

What's On Top of the Current Top 20?

BLACKPINK Tops the Chart

For only the second time in the history of doing this chart thing, a K-Pop song tops my Current Top 20. BLACKPINK is one of the hottest K-Pop groups from South Korea. They are a quartet of young ladies with a lot of style, sass and moves. They can also sing too.

"How You Like  That" is a very catchy song with an electro pop/dance beat. The lyrics are in broken English and Korean. Makes for an interesting mix.

What stands out the most is the very stylish music video. BLACKPINK is all about style, attitude and sass. The video brings this out in a pleasantly tasteful way, yet still makes any guy yearn to be in the presence of these women.

The music video has set some new world records for 2020:

  • Most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours
  • Most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours
  • Most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop group
  • Most viewers for the premiere of a video on YouTube
  • Most viewers for the premiere of a music video on YouTube

"How You Like That" is BLACKPINK's first single from the group's forthcoming debut album BLACKPINK: The Album set for release on October 2.

"How You Like That" has gone to #1 on the charts in Malaysia, Singapore, three charts in South Korea (Goon, Goon Albums, K-Pop Hot 100) and the U.S. World Digital Song Sales (Billboard). It has been a top 20 pop hit in Japan, Canada, Australia, Hungary and New Zealand. It peaked at #33 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart last month.

CHIQUIS, TAYLOR SWIFT and TINA TURNER Have Top Hits

Chiquis and Becky G's remake of "Jolene" got the blessing from songwriter and original performer Dolly Parton to do this song as a new Spanish language hit. It's a great cover with a good video. The record makes it to #2 this week.

Taylor Swift surprised her fans two weeks ago when she unexpectedly released a new album. Her latest album is called Folklore, and is a departure from the recent style of her pop albums of recent years. The first single "Cardigan" with its compelling video, is at #3 this week after making its chart debut at #8 last week. Could be a big hit for Swfit.

Eighty year old Tina Turner is back on the charts with a remix of her 1984 #1 hit "What's Love Got to Do With It" by Norwegian DJ and record producer Kygo. The song is a top 10 hit on the U.S. dance chart and is bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100. On the Current Top 20 it's at #10 this week up from last week's debut of #19.

Here is this week's Current Top 20 chart which can also be checked out weekly at this page and this link. The link to the permanent chart is at this page: M4B Charts Central Mel's Current Top 20

CHART NOTES:

PSY's "Gangnam Style" may be only a flash in the pan as the insanely popular K-Pop hit falls from last week's #1 position back to #3 this week. Taking PSY's place at the top of the chart is Taylor Swift who was there 2 weeks ago with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". Yep, she's at #1 for a second but non-consecutive week. This is the 2nd time this has happened this year where a song fell out of the #1 spot only to get back there again for a second round. The last song to do that was "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye earlier this summer.

What is even more remarkable is that the #2 song moves up from #3... Maroon 5's "One More Night" which formerly peaked at #1 4 weeks ago is climbing up again. Wow.

Adele's hit single "Skyfall" moves up 5 from #18 last week to #13 this week. This is the title track from the latest James Bond movie coming to theaters next month. Good song.

Two songs make their debut this week. At #19 we find Rihanna on the chart again with her latest "Diamonds" checking in at #19. Following her, The Rolling Stones (yes, they are still making records) make a debut at #20 with "Doom and Gloom" the latest single off their newest compilation album Grrr!
