CHART NOTES

Caro Emerald holds on to the #1 spot for the 3rd week in a row with "Back It Up." Lady Ga Ga's "Alejandro" moves up 1 point from #3 to #2 this week.

Barenaked Ladies debut with the title track "Every Subway Car" from their latest album with the same name. This is not the current featured single off the album which is "You Run Away". Both tracks are getting good play on my iTunes and iPods, but I think "Subway Car" is the better of the 2 tracks. It was also a free download from Amazon.com a few weeks ago, hence it got a head start on my playlist before I acquired the album and the rest of the tracks. "Every Subway Car" makes its Weekly Top 20 debut at #19.

CHART NOTES

Caro Emerald holds on to the #1 spot for the 2nd week in a row with "Back It Up." Just behind her and moving up one point each are Colbie Caillat's "I Never Told You" at #2 and Lady Ga Ga's "Alejandro" at #3.

There is only one debut song and it's by Smashing Pumpkins. "A Stitch in Time" was available as a free download from several websites. It is one of supposedly 44 songs that will appear on a new Smashing Pumpkins' album called Teagarden by Kaleidyscope. That album is scheduled to be released on May 25. This week the track debuts at #20 on Mel's Weekly Top 20.

Finally here is a cool video from Shiny Toy Guns and their hit track "Major Tom" that has been used in the Lincoln MKS commercials since last year. This live rendition captures the intensity of the group's performance with the famous car commercial clip playing behind them. The song went to #1 for a few weeks last year on Mel's Weekly Top 20 and ended up being the 13th biggest hit of 2009 on the yearly Top 100 Hits chart.

CHART NOTES

This week jazzy songstress Caro Emerald tops the chart for the first time with her hit single "Back It Up." The highly danceable and catchy track should be on everyone's chart the world over. OK... so it may be a little late on this chart (or is it too early?).... The song was released last September. It was through The SixtyOne.com website that I first ran into a Caro Emerald song last month with the track, "A Night Like This", in and of itself another catchy track. I liked Ms. Emerald's laid back and bouncy style that I seeked out more information and music by her hence finding this single as well as her album on iTunes. Bought it all and am a happy listener. So this week "Back It Up" is the new #1 single on Mel's Weekly Top 20.

I hate having to write about Lady GaGa every week but I just can't escape it. This week her latest single "Alejandro" breaks not only into the top 10 but the top 5 this week. The single leaps from #11 last week to #5 this week. Another #1 for the popular diva? Maybe.

The other "Lady" as in Lady Antebellum have two songs crossing each other in the top 10. "Need You Now," a former #1 song on this chart is slowly making its way down dropping another point out of the top 5 from #5 to #6. Meanwhile the group's follow-up single "American Honey" moves up 2 from #9 to #7.

Taio Cruz's rap song "Break Your Heart" is now a top 10 hit, moving up 3 from #13 to #10.

Jack Johnson's got a new single that clocks in at #18. "You and Your Heart" was released this week and has made some serious sales being listed in the top 10 on iTunes. The song is a prelude to an upcoming new album by Mr. Johnson.

CHART NOTES:

We got a lot of movement this week. First off, Lady GaGa holds at #1 for a 2nd week with "Telephone" a popular duet she does with Beyonce. Lady GaGa also debuts at #17 with "Alejandro", a track off her latest album The Fame Monster. And her former #1 hit "Bad Romance" has departed this chart after a long chart run that started on November 15, 2009.
The Script has inched their way up the chart one position at the time over several weeks. This week "Breakeven" moves up 1 from #3 to #2. Is the top spot reachable by this group?

Jazzy diva Caro Emerald leaps 7 points this week moving from #11 to #4 with her danceable track, "Back It Up." This song is not listed on any charts that I know of. I think this track and her newer "A Night Like This" single should be getting tons of radio airplay and listings on various charts. Her music is a refreshing break from a sea of sameness.

Colbie Caillat is making a strong chart showing as her latest track "I Never Told You" moves up 2 from #8 to #6. Other movers in an upward stance this week include Carrie Underwood with "Temporary Home" up 1 from #10 to #9; Lady Antebellum moving from #16 to #11 with "American Honey", this while "Need You Now" is still in the top 5 at #3.

A Fine Frenzy gains positions by moving up 3 from #15 to #12 with "Blow Away". Noisettes may have another hit here with "Every Now and Then" moving up 4 from #17 to #13. And Donny Osmond also moves up 4 from #19 to #15 with his cover version of "I Have You To Thank," a track that seems to not be available in the domestic market.

For songs to move up, it is unfortunate that some songs have to also move down. Taking big tumbles this week are Marina & the Diamonds. They held on to the #7 spot for the last 2 weeks with "Hollywood". This week the song takes a 7 point dive moving down to #14. Also falling 7 points is Ringo Starr. His latest track "Walk With You" falls from #9 to #16. And finally Black Eyed Peas are on their way out as "Imma Be" tumbles from #13 to #19. That was a short lived hit in these parts.
