Davy Jones: 1945 - 2012 R.I.P.

Saddened to hear the news today that Davy Jones, one of the singers in the TV network manufactured rock group The Monkees has passed away. Jones died of an apparent heart attack in Florida.

Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz burst into the music scene and TV living rooms when their TV show The Monkees made its national debut in 1966. They clicked almost immediately with young viewers throughout the United States. Their first two singles, "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm a Believer" catapulted to the top of the charts, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and many other places.

Over the course of the years, The Monkees would enjoy huge success scoring top hits with songs like "Words," "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Mary Mary", "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" (originally done by Paul Revere & the Raiders) and "Daydream Believer" a #1 song that is most associated with singer Davy Jones.

Jones appeared on TV on programs such as The Brady Bunch, Love American Style and Here Come the Brides. He also enjoyed a solo music career and had a handful of minor top 40 hits including "Rainy Jane" and "Girl".

God bless Davy Jones, rest in peace.

Madonna takes residence in the top 5 at #4 with her latest "Give Me All Your Luvin'" featuring rappers M.I.A.and Nicki Minaj. The song was featured in this year's Super Bowl halftime show. The track is from her upcoming album MDNA.

Matt Cardle stalls at #10 with "Starlight". His last single, "Run For Your Life" peaked at #1 during the last week of 2011 and the first week of 2012. It just fell off the chart, and is now replaced with his latest single, "Amazing" coming in for the first week at #19.

Also debuting on the chart is Fun, and their track "We Are Young" at #18. The song hit #1 on both Amazon and iTunes charts.

CHART NOTES

Katy Perry holds on to the #1 spot for a second consecutive week with her single, "The One That Got Away". Check out the music video at the top. The song is the latest top 10 hit from her album Teenage Dream. Katy Perry had the 2nd most highest rated song on Mel's Weekly Top 20 Top 100 Hits of 2011 chart with "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)". That record stayed at #1 for 6 weeks.

Holding at #2 for a 2nd week is Nickelback and their latest single "When We Stand Together."

The song at #3 has grown on me quite fast. It's "Drive By" from Train, their latest single. The video is cool... gotta love the cars and of course the woman is pretty too. "Drive By" cruises up from #6 to #3 this week.

Biggest mover in the top 20 is definitely by Madonna. She makes a huge leap by moving from her debut spot at #20 of last week to #9 this week with "Give Me All Your Luvin'". She is joined on this single by contemporaries Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Way down at #19 we see one of the odd debut songs... Olly Murs' "Dance With Me Tonight" makes its second debut on the top 20 at #19 this week. The song fell off the chart last week after debuting at #20 two weeks ago. So far it has spent 2 weeks on the chart, and has made its debut twice, though this week it is marked as a "return". We'll see if this song can push some forward momentum.

Falling off from the chart this week is Coldplay's "Paradise". The song spent an incredible 22 weeks on the Weekly Top 20, peaking at #1 for 7 weeks late last year, making it the longest lived #1 track for 2011 and putting it on the top of the chart, numero uno for the Top 100 Hits of 2011. Now Coldplay is back with their latest single off the album Mylo Xyloto. This time their track "Charlie Brown" makes its chart debut at #20. It's the latest of 4 singles to be released from that album.

CHART NOTES

Katy Perry bumps Toby Keith out of the number 1 slot with her latest single "The One That Got Away" off theTeenage Dream album. Record's been out for nearly 2 years and it is still yielding top 10, much less #1 hits. Wow.

Moving up from #4 to #2 is Nickelback. Their latest single "When We Stand Togehter" could be a contender for #1. Not too far behind Nickelback we find Train, who have moved 5 points up from #11 to #6 this week with "Drive By". Will be interesting to see where these songs go.
Inbetween them we find some venerable top 10 hits including Mayer Hawthorne's broken hearted drama, "The Walk" moving up from #6 to #4, The Ting Tings up from #7 to #5 with "Hang It Up." And yes, "Red Solo Cup" is still in the top 5 at #3 after holding on to #1 for 2 weeks.

Breaking into the Top 10 we find Asteroids Galaxy Tour with their latest, "Heart Attack" up from #14 to #9 this week.

The only debut song comes from Madonna who had a successful but not without controversy, half time show at the recently completed Super Bowl football game. There she added "Give Me All Your Luvin'" (debuting at #20) into her mix of danceable top 40 tunes.

CHART NOTES

Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup", the goofiest country song of recent years, holds for the 2nd week at #1. Right behind Keith is Katy Perry, whose lastest single, "The One That Got Away" inches up from #3 to #2 this week. Top of the charts next week? Maybe.

A big break into the top 5 is Nickelback, whose latest rock anthem "When We Stand Together" bolts from #9 of last week to #4 this week.

That is still not the biggest rising song of the week. Honors for that feat goes to Train and their latest single "Drive By". That song climbs from its debut spot of #19 last week to #11 this week.

Three songs make their chart debuts: At #18 we find Kelly Clarkson returning in fine form with her latest "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)", Gotye at #19 with "Somebody I Used to Know" and Olly Murs at #20 with "Dance With Me Tonight".

We have 4 former #1 songs still on the chart, all of them dropping.... Dropping from #2 to #3 is Adele and "Someone Like You" which held the top spot for only 1 week two weeks ago. This week it drops 1 from #2 to #3. At #8 we find Matt Cardle with "Run For Your Life," followed by Bruno Mars "It Will Rain" at #9. Dropping out of the top 10 after many weeks there (including 7 at #1) is Coldplay with their huge hit "Paradise". It moves 2 points down from #10 last week to #12 this week. Matt Cardle and Coldplay have new singles waiting in the wings to replace these veteran hits.
